bookobscure was established in February 2013 by Sayaka Fukuda ACR, an accredited member of The Institute of Conservation and ex-licentiate member of Designer Bookbinders. All projects are looked after by Sayaka Fukuda from inception to completion, this ensures the quality of work within agreed timeframe and budget. Every project is approached as a unique project and assessed with consideration for its individual circumstances. We work for both private clients and institutions. Past clients include: The Victoria & Albert Museum, Royal College of Music, University of London, Cartier Archives, The Clothworkers Company, Wellcome Trust and many others.

Sayaka Fukuda
Born in Tokyo, Japan.   Worked as a professional photographer after gaining BA (Hons.) in Photography from Nihon University in 2000. Gained BA (Hons.) in Book Arts and Crafts at London College of Communication, and MA in Conservation Studies with Distinction at West Dean College. After gaining a considerable experience as a bookbinder at a commercial bindery in Clerkenwell, London and The Victoria & Albert Museum as a conservator, Sayaka set up her own practice where her wide range of experience can offer a unique service to clients. Sayaka relocated to a village near Narberth, Pembrokeshire in January 2018.

While Sayaka was in London she was actively involved in Conservation and Bookbinding community. She was on Continuous Training Register committee for The Institute of Conservation Book and Paper Group and helped organising a major conference took place in London, April 2015, also exhibited her creative work related to book style objects internationally. Not only exhibited but Sayaka also helped organising Designer Bookbinder’s InsideOUT touring exhibition and acted as a curator in Minneapolis. She started a new role as a Designer Bookbinders and Society of Bookbinders liaison group committee member to improve the communication between two UK based Bookbinders group and to jointly promote this unique craft.

Outside books and crafts, I am a keen beginner horse rider and it has been my great passion, which has been on a long pause since my daughter arrived but hoping to resume the wonderful activity in a beautiful country side of West Wales very soon!
