CONSERVATION & RESTORATION
At bookobscure we undertake a wide range of conservation and restoration work on paper and book based objects, including photographs and enclosures. The size of the project we can undertake ranges from one object to a whole collection. We are experienced in working with a variety of institutions and private individuals in the nature and size of their collections. Please do not hesitate to get in touch for an initial consultation.
A condition assessment is usually carried out in preparation for practical treatment. However, in some cases, this can be conducted independently for other purposes, such as funding applications or initial investigation into the physical and environmental condition of collections. We provide a full survey report on completion of our assessment, which includes advice on how to improve the current condition, storage, and accessibility.
Practical treatment is where interventive treatment is carried out on objects. Common treatments include;
Consolidation of structure
Re-backing or re-binding
Other Specific Treatment
Cleaning and treating mould damaged documents
Metal corroded inks and pigment consolidation and/or support such as Iron gall or copper
Re-touching in areas of loss
Exhibition and Display Preparation
We are experienced in preparing objects for exhibitions and displays. We were involved in some major exhibitions at Victoria & Albert Museum and familiar with the current UK and international standard. We can provide conservation assessments, treatments, display solutions, such as mounts, frames, book cradles and display cases, and advise on display condition. We can also offer to produce condition reports for loan objects and act as a courier to attend transits and installations.
Housing Solutions and Storage Environments
Correct storage condition is these days considered as the first priority in conservation strategies (Preventive conservation) as money and time spent on physical treatment can be wasted in objects are placed back in unsuitable environment. Preventive conservation involves improvement and upkeep of storage condition, which covers a wide range of subjects from controlling air quality, room temperature and relative humidity level, pest management to employing suitable materials for creation of storage room, shelving, paints and housing. It is a huge area to tackle and often very costly process. In most cases, the improvement will be made over time as resource becomes available. Therefore, it is important to approach the project holistically from its inception so limited resource can be wisely invested for future. We can provide you with advice in environmental condition as well as bespoke archival housing and boxing solutions. We are a specialist maker in a custom made box that require complex structure or simply when something has to be made well.
